Two products, three revenue streams: the device, the app, and the two bundled together. The bundle is the flagship — highest value, stickiest, and the hardest for a price-cutter to copy. Lead consumer-first (women's safety + students) via your own site, then Amazon.
The strategic decision that shapes everything: what role does the app play? (a) free, to drive device sales; (b) the recurring-revenue engine behind the device; or (c) a standalone product sold to people who never buy the device. That choice defines the funnel — see §3.
Do NOT chase the lone-worker B2B market yet. It looks lucrative but it's a regulated capital trap: BS 8484 certification + a monitored Alarm Receiving Centre + £250k–500k + 12–18 months before you can credibly sell. Park it as a Phase 2 play once the consumer line funds itself.
| Growth | UK/global personal-safety market growing at ~11% CAGR (2025–2030); smart-safety segment ~60% share and rising. |
| Demand drivers | ~85,000 women raped / year in England & Wales; 2M+ experience domestic abuse; 60%+ of urban women report harassment. Pepper spray & stun guns are illegal in the UK — alarms are the main legal option. |
| Benchmark competitor | "Ashley" — the best-selling UK women's alarm (130dB siren, 200-lumen strobe), ~£35–40. Beat it on app features, not on being a louder dumb alarm. |
| Our edge | Bluetooth + companion app (family sharing, GPS, alerts) at the impulse price point. The incumbents are mostly app-less hardware or hardware-less apps. |
| Segment | Priority | Why / how to reach |
|---|---|---|
| Women's personal safety | PRIMARY | 40–50% of the market. 18–45, urban, runners/commuters/students. Facebook/Instagram + micro-influencers. "Feel confident walking home." |
| Students | SECONDARY | 2.5M UK students. Universities buy alarms for welcome packs — a bulk distribution channel, not just D2C. |
| Domestic abuse survivors | BRAND | Charity partnerships (Refuge, SafeLives, DASH, Suzy Lamplugh). PR + credibility. ⚠ Needs a discreet/silent alert mode — a loud siren can expose a hidden phone. |
| Elderly & vulnerable | LATER | Large but owned by subscription incumbents (SureSafe, Taking Care, £12–32/mo) and councils. Partner, don't fight head-on. |
| Lone workers (B2B) | PHASE 2 | 8M UK lone workers, employer duty of care — but gated by BS 8484 + ARC (see §6). Strategic, not for the launch. |
| Stream | What it is | Model & price | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| ① Device | The hardware alarm (BLE, 120dB siren, SOS flash, USB-C) | One-off £29–35 | Acquisition + cash up front. Beats £12–32/mo incumbents on "buy once." |
| ② App | Companion app (emergency contacts, GPS, family sharing, alerts) | Free tier + premium £2.99/mo, or standalone sub | Recurring revenue + lifetime value. The only stream that compounds. |
| ③ Device + App bundle | Sold together as one product | Bundle price, or device + included trial → subscription | The flagship. Highest value, stickiest, hardest to copy on price. |
Most robust: (b) — lead with the bundle, device gets cash up front, premium app builds the recurring base. Revisit (c) once the brand is known.
Other pricing levers: council/charity wholesale £18–22/unit (low margin, high volume, good for PR); full monitored subscription (£9.99/mo) only once there's an ARC/monitoring partner — defer until product-market fit.
Conversion landing page, content ("walking home safe"), early reviews, micro-influencers. £500→£1,500/mo ads to women 18–35. Target 3–5% conversion, 50–100 units/mo.
Prime eligibility, "Safety & Security" + "Sports". Price £29.99 (under Ashley). A+ content, sponsored ads on "personal alarm women / safety keychain". 100–300 units/mo once ranked.
Co-branded "in partnership with Refuge" edition; donate-one models; pitch university welcome packs (bulk). Earns media in Metro / Standard / women's titles.
Lone-worker (BS 8484 gated) and insurance add-ons are long-cycle, high-barrier. Pursue only after the consumer line funds it.
A realistic blended build across the three streams — device cash up front via DTC + Amazon, premium app subscribers compounding behind it:
| Stream / route | Volume (by month 8) | Indicative revenue | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ① Device — Website DTC | ~300 units @ £34.99 | ~£10,500 | ~£10/unit profit after COGS + CAC. Highest margin route. |
| ① Device — Amazon UK | ~300 units @ £29.99 | ~£9,000 | Thin per-unit; drives discovery & reviews. |
| ② App — premium subscribers | ~200 subs × £2.99/mo | ~£600/mo & growing | The compounding stream — small at first, the long-term engine. |
| ③ Bundle uplift | attach rate on device sales | higher AOV | Bundling lifts average order value & subscriber conversion vs device-only. |
Device DTC: £34.99 − £25.20 (COGS £10 + shipping + 3.4% processing + ~£10 CAC + returns) = ~£9.79/unit (28%).
Device on Amazon: after 15% referral + FBA, profit is razor-thin (~£0–4) until COGS drops at 1,000+ units and reviews lift conversion — Amazon is for volume & ranking, DTC is for margin.
App premium: near-zero marginal cost per subscriber — this is where margin lives at scale. Even a modest attach rate turns the device from a one-off into a lifetime-value customer.
Implication: the realistic B2B wedge is price-sensitive SMEs (5–50 lone workers) wanting BS 8484 without lock-in — but only after certification. Not a 2026 revenue line.
| Area | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Product | CE / UKCA marking, RoHS. Product liability insurance (£2M+). Ear-safe directional 120dB+ speaker. |
| Data (app) | GDPR for emergency-contact + location data; clear privacy policy; PECR for email/SMS marketing. |
| ASA claims ✅ | "Helps you feel safer", "120dB siren", "alerts your chosen contacts", "BS 8484 certified" (only once true). |
| ASA claims ❌ | "100% safe", "guaranteed protection", "guaranteed police response", "never miss an emergency". Must disclose "requires mobile signal / phone nearby". |
| When | Action |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1–2 | Lock spec; sample from 2–3 manufacturers; settle the slimmer enclosure (current 72×40×28mm is chunky). Confirm siren + SOS + BLE priority (torch dropped). |
| Weeks 3–4 | MVP app: emergency contacts + siren trigger + battery monitor. Brand, packaging, Shopify build. |
| Month 2 | Order first ~500 units (~£5k). Beta 20–30 units for reviews. CE/UKCA + GDPR groundwork. |
| Month 3 | Soft launch, £500/mo ads, PR + influencer outreach. Collect 20+ reviews. |
| Months 2–4 | App Store readiness: landing/web pages, App Store + Google Play listing pages (screenshots, copy, privacy labels), and submission. (Pre-req: active Apple Developer Program account.) |
| Months 4–6 | Amazon FBA live; scale ads to £1,500/mo; charity + university partnership conversations. |
Indicative launch budget: ~£8–10k (inventory + app + brand + first ads). Break-even cumulative ~Month 8.
